Mullen is the author of It Takes a Village Idiot: A Memoir of Life After the City, a comic memoir about his move from New York City's Greenwich Village to a former dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains. The memoir was a runner-up for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Mullen previously authored the Hot Sheet for 13 years, a topical humor column for Entertainment Weekly magazine that poked fun at celebrities. His freelance work has appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine, and The Village Voice.
